The Priest Rørdam and the Sand Rope at Odda, Hardanger
Hordaland · Norway · Church
The servant read the devil loose – and the priest's sand rope, made by the servant's hand, is said to lie in the fjord still.
The legend says the priest Rørdam, like Peter Dass, had attended the Wittenberg school and owned the black book. One weekend, while he preached in Odda, his servant read the devil free and set him to count grain and twist rope from sand on the shore. The priest sensed it, was rowed home, and bound the devil just as the rope was finished. The sand rope was placed in the church loft and later thrown into the fjord, where it is said to lie still.
