The Cow That Was the Evil One (Eksingedal)

Hordaland · Norway · Sägenplats · Scare 3/5

A din from the byre broke up the card game in the hayloft. The men led a loose cow back and forth — until it bolted out in flames. It was the Devil.

Some men were playing cards in the hayloft when such an uproar arose down in the byre that they went to look. A cow was loose, but however they led it there was no empty stall — every cow already stood in its place. Suddenly the cow bolted for the door in a blaze of flame, and then they understood it was the Evil One himself they had been leading about. After that there was no more card-playing.
