At Hirhalsen in Stor-Elvdal four men sat playing cards one Christmas Eve while they drank. An unknown man joined them and seemed agreeable, but when a card fell and someone bent for it, one of his feet was seen to be a horse's hoof. The man rose and left without a word, and the game ended abruptly. A similar thing is told of Engerdal, where the stranger left a horseshoe behind on the floor.
