On the crown of the hill stands the keramat of Iskandar Shah, a shrine said to be the last king's grave, and visitors still leave offerings there. At night, walkers tell of whispers, dull thuds and white-clad figures moving among the trees — and the ground closest to the shrine is named as the most active.
In Malay the hill is Bukit Larangan, the Forbidden Hill, because commoners were not permitted to set foot where the rulers of the old kingdom of Singapura lived and were buried in the fourteenth century. Since then the British have laid a fort and a colonial cemetery on top, and a Second World War command bunker was cut into the rock — the hill carries layer upon layer of the dead.
