Those who have got in beneath the collapsed blue roof all report the same thing: whispers, footsteps in empty halls and an oppressive sense of being watched. Istana Woodneuk lies hidden in dense forest only minutes from the Botanic Gardens, and despite gates and guards the ruin has become one of Singapore's most talked-about haunted houses — the most expensive too, it is often said, counting the land beneath it.

The palace was completed in 1935 as a residence for Sultan Ibrahim of Johor and his Scottish wife, Sultana Helen, who died the following year. It was abandoned after the Second World War, gutted by fire in 2006 and left to rot in the forest — its blue tiled roof partly caved in over the halls.
