In Nordfjord they tell of a man who owned the black book and once, while he was in church, let another read the devil free. In his distress the other set him to empty a nearby lake, and the devil bailed until the water stood level with the surrounding mountains. The man in church saw it, understood, and hurried home to bind him. Another time an unskilled man read the devil loose and set him to coil a rope of sand, but it broke apart every third ell.
