Sadullah Pasha Yali
Istanbul · Turkiet · House
For decades Necibe Hanim waited in a pink dress for her dead pasha — and in pink she is still said to drift through the mansion's halls.
The rose-coloured 18th-century waterfront mansion in Cengelkoy carries the most melancholy ghost story on the Bosphorus. When ambassador Sadullah Pasha took his own life in Vienna in 1891, his wife Necibe Hanim refused to believe the news: she put on the pink dress he had loved and waited for his return in the house until her own death in 1917. Later owners told of a pink-clad female figure roaming garden and corridors with a lantern, asking after her pasha — several sold the house in haste. Carefully preserved today, the yali still stirs imaginations on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus.
