Lubart's Castle, Lutsk
Volyn · Ukraine · Castle
In Lubart's Castle in Lutsk, young Oksana is said to walk again – the girl who refused the commandant and paid with her life.
The medieval brick castle in Lutsk was raised by the Lithuanian prince Lubart in the fourteenth century and is one of Ukraine's best preserved strongholds. Among its darkest tales is the story of Oksana, a young woman the fortress commandant fell in love with. When she rejected him, he had her killed and her body thrown into the river Styr – and ever since, her figure is said to appear by the walls at night. The castle gate is also said to hold a gentler power: a couple who make a wish beneath Lubart's arch will have it granted.
