In the Renaissance castle of Pidhirtsi walks the White Lady – the young mistress said to have been walled up alive by her jealous husband.

The Renaissance castle at Pidhirtsi east of Lviv is counted among Ukraine's most haunted places. According to legend, the ageing magnate Waclaw Rzewuski, in a fit of jealousy, had his nineteen-year-old wife walled up alive in the castle cellars. Ever since, the White Lady appears in its halls and corridors – a pale female figure guarding the spot where she died. Visitors and staff have told of footsteps, cold drafts and silhouettes, and in 2010 a ghost-hunting TV crew recorded unexplained phenomena in the castle.
