Marshland off River Road near the Mississinewa Reservoir in Indiana, where reservoir staff report that at least eight bodies have been recovered.

Okie Pinokie lies off River Road on the way to the Mississinewa Reservoir in Indiana. Take the right at the Y in the road and you come to a small cluster of pillars at the entrance to a gravel track.

The ground here was swampy and marshy before the reservoir was built. According to staff at Mississinewa, at least eight bodies have been recovered from it over the years, in various states of decay. That is the part of this entry that is not folklore.

What is folklore is the explanation local people give for the atmosphere: that the site was a burial ground or a battlefield, and that the trees are full of the dead. Neither claim has been established, and the Miami people whose country this is have not been consulted on either.

The gravel road is the route everyone takes and the site is on public reservoir land. What draws visitors is a genuinely uncomfortable stretch of wet woodland that has, over decades, kept producing human remains.
