The old bridge at Spooky Hollow

Indiana · United States · Execution site

The bridge here was covered once. What is said to have happened from its roof is one of the most serious claims in this archive.

The bridge in this hollow near Crawfordsville, Indiana was a covered bridge. It is gone and a newer one stands in its place.

Two stories attach to the old one. In the first, a Black man was hanged from the roof of the bridge. In the second, a woman died on it, and nobody says how.

Neither is documented, and the first should not be repeated as fact about this bridge.

It should also not be dismissed as impossible. Indiana had lynchings. The most infamous took place at Marion in 1930 and was photographed, and the photograph became one of the defining images of racial violence in the north. Covered bridges appear in these accounts across the midwest for the plain reason that they had a roof and a beam.

The ritual visitors perform involves shining headlights under the bridge and flashing them three times.

The road is public and rural.
