A stranger paused at the church, walked to the suicides' corner of the graveyard – then drove off like an arrow.

By Brunkeberg church in Seljord, the tar-burner Hallvor was given a ride by a stranger who first stopped to study the graves in the suicides' corner. Then they tore off toward Grini at furious speed. Only when Hallvor cried a holy name did the rig vanish through the air. That same evening a man at Grini had taken his life – and Hallvor's tar pile had burned to ash.
