They didn't believe in ghosts. Then they took the night shift

Guests check in, sleep and check out. The staff are there every night, year after year, when the building is at its emptiest. They are the ones who learn what moves once the corridors go dark. Here are three places where the people who work there have the most to tell.

Ask anyone who has worked nights at an old hotel. Most just shrug. Some go quiet. And a few change the subject a little too quickly.

Guests check in, sleep, check out. They are there for a night, maybe two. The staff are there every night, year after year, in the hours when the building is at its emptiest. They are the ones who learn what moves once the corridors go dark.

These are three places where the people who work there have the most to tell. You can book a night at all three.

The old ocean liner lies moored in Long Beach and runs as a hotel. Housekeepers have found bathroom taps running in rooms where no one had stayed, and bedding pulled back soon after a bed was made. Most notorious is cabin B340, closed in the seventies and reopened in 2018 as a ghost attraction. The staff speak of it with a certain seriousness.

The Crescent Hotel, built in 1886, has been a girls' school and, under the con man Norman Baker in the thirties, a fake cancer clinic. Night staff and guests report figures in the corridors and a presence that lingers on certain floors. The hotel calls itself America's most haunted, and the night shift does not seem to disagree.

The vast asylum took in patients from 1864 to 1994 and was badly overcrowded for much of that time. Today guides lead night tours through the empty wards. Many of them have stories of their own, of voices, footsteps and doors, from nights when they thought they were alone in the building.

Is it proof? No. It is testimony, and testimony is not the same as fact. People get tired, mishear, and enjoy telling a good story.

But there is something about the same kind of observation recurring, year after year, from people who do not know each other and who would rather it stopped. These are not tourists chasing a thrill. They are people simply trying to get through their shift.

Maybe it is the imagination playing tricks in an old house that creaks. Maybe not.
