Some places frighten you because someone invented a good story. Others frighten you because the story is true.

We went through our database and picked ten places with the highest scare rating that you can actually visit for real. Real addresses, real opening hours, and in a couple of cases a room you can book for the night.

One thing before we begin. This is not a contest of suffering. Several of these places carry real tragedies and deserve to be visited with respect. The scare rating is also our editorial judgement, not a law of nature. Treat it as a signpost, not a verdict.

Beneath Paris's elegant streets rest the remains of roughly six million people. From 1788 the city's overflowing cemeteries were emptied and the bones carried down into the old quarries in nighttime processions. Today you walk through kilometres of tunnels lined with stacked skulls.

In the Capuchin catacombs beneath Palermo, some eight thousand mummified bodies stand and hang, many still dressed in their finest clothes. The monks embalmed their dead for centuries. Row after row of preserved faces meets you in the half-dark.

Bhangarh is often called India's most haunted place. The national heritage authority has posted a sign forbidding entry between sunset and sunrise. By day the fort is open and beautiful. When darkness falls, you are meant to be gone.

Leap Castle has a room called the Bloody Chapel and an oubliette, a pit of forgetting, where so many bones were later found that it took several cartloads to clear them. The castle is said to be guarded by a presence known only as the Elemental.

This is where the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were held and executed. The gaol has stood empty of prisoners for almost a century, but the weight of what happened lingers in the cold, echoing corridors. Today it is a museum and one of Dublin's most moving places.

Built for 250 patients, at its worst it held ten times that many. It was home to the notorious West Virginia Lobotomy Project. Long closed as a hospital, it now opens for guided tours, including overnight ghost hunts for those who want to stay.

The castle-like prison in Mansfield was the filming location for The Shawshank Redemption. Behind its handsome facade, more than two hundred people died inside the walls. You can tour the cell blocks, among the largest free-standing steel ones ever built.

Marketed as America's most haunted hotel. The building was once a fake cancer clinic run by the con man Norman Baker, who sold a cure he could not give. Today it is a working hotel where you can check in and see whether you get company.

The old luxury liner lies moored in Long Beach and serves as a hotel. Over the years staff and guests have reported well over a hundred presences. In cabin B340, bedding is said to be pulled off freshly made beds. You can book the room.

Closest to home is Penningby by Lake Väsby, a well-preserved medieval castle. The story goes that a lodger was seized by the foot in the night by a bony, invisible hand. The castle is open to visitors in summer, and you need not travel far to feel the chill.
