It is rarely a loud warning. More often a sentence said in passing, in a lowered voice. Do not go there after dark. And above all, do not go alone.

Deep in the forests of Östergötland lies one such place. It has lived in folklore for generations, and it carries a name that makes conversations fall silent.

Barnmördarkorset, the Child Murderer's Cross, is not much to look at. A glade, a simple cross, and forest on every side. The name comes from an old legend of a child said to have died here, and the cross was raised in its memory. That is all the place shows you at first glance.

But those who have been there tell of other things. Whispers in the wind when the air is still. Children's cries echoing through the night. An icy presence that seems to follow every step, even as you turn to leave.

Some leave the glade merely shaken. Others leave it with scratch marks on their arms and back that they cannot explain.

Is any of this proven? No. This is a legend, not a police report, and we claim nothing more. But this is exactly how a place becomes haunted. Not by a ghost, but by a story that refuses to let go of the ground.
