Fort de la Chartreuse

Vallonien – provinsen Liège · Belgien · Fortress

In this abandoned fort above Liège – monastery, prison and war hospital in one – the spirit of a dead nurse is said to still make her rounds.

Fort de la Chartreuse above Liège has been a Carthusian monastery, a 19th-century fort, a WWI prison for spies and an American military hospital in WWII. Abandoned since the 1980s, it is regularly ranked as Belgium's most haunted place. Visitors and ghost hunters report footsteps in empty corridors, voices and sudden cold, and a medium is said to have made contact with the spirit of a nurse from the hospital era – relaying details no one could have known. Locals also tell of a child who died on one of the rooftops and whose presence still lingers. Today the fort is a crumbling urbex mecca where nature slowly reclaims the wards.
