The Gravensteen, the moated castle of the Counts of Flanders in central Ghent, is one of Europe's best-preserved medieval fortresses – and one of its darkest. From the 15th century it served as a court and prison, where captives were stretched on the rack and interrogated with water and hot irons in the damp underground cells. Local tradition holds that the suffering seeped into the walls: visitors report unexplained noises, sudden drops in temperature and whispers in the stone passages, and the spirits of the tortured are said to linger in the dungeons. The castle's most talked-about ghost is a knight said to seek revenge on those who caused his death. Today the Gravensteen is a museum with a notorious collection of torture instruments.
