Devil's Throat Cave

Smoljan · Bulgarien · Natural site

The Devil's Throat cave in the Rhodope Mountains is called the gate to the underworld – nothing the river drags down into the dark ever surfaces again.

Deep in the Rhodope Mountains, the Trigrad river plunges into the Devil's Throat cave over Bulgaria's highest underground waterfall. According to ancient legend this is where Orpheus descended into the underworld to bring back Eurydice, and in the thundering hall he turned around and lost her forever. Objects thrown into the river never emerge on the far side of the mountain, and no diver has managed to follow the water through the siphons. Another tale holds that at night the souls of the dead climb out of the chasm to seek out, one last time, those they loved.
