Shishentsi in north-western Bulgaria is one of the country's most talked-about ghost villages, drawing the curious in search of the supernatural. According to local legend, a wedding procession riding through the village long ago was ambushed and cut down by Tatars. Ever since, their voices, songs and laments are said to be heard at night along the road where it happened. The few remaining villagers readily tell of sounds and figures that defy explanation, and the village has become a fixed destination for Bulgarian ghost hunters.
