Mário Quintana House of Culture (Hotel Majestic)
Rio Grande do Sul · Brazil · Hotel
In the old pink grand hotel where poet Mário Quintana lived, the piano sometimes plays by itself – and shadows drift down the corridors after closing time.
The rose-coloured Hotel Majestic was Porto Alegre's finest address in the 1930s and 40s, hosting guests like Getúlio Vargas, and the poet Mário Quintana lived here for twelve years. Since 1990 the building has been a cultural centre bearing his name – but staff insist some old guests never checked out. Those working late tell of a piano that starts playing on its own, doors slamming without the slightest draught, objects falling and shadowy figures in the long corridors. The house's own management has invited visitors to hear the employees' accounts – the building, they say, is full of living memories.
