The Solar do Unhão is a stately colonial estate on the Salvador waterfront, built in the 17th century as a sugar mill and transshipment point. Behind its handsome facade broods a brutal past: enslaved Africans laboured and died here, and legend holds that the estate is haunted by those murdered on the grounds. At night, whispers, moans and the sound of chains dragging across the stone floors are said to carry through the buildings, and figures of both masters and the enslaved are glimpsed in the shadows. Today the estate houses Bahia's Museum of Modern Art – sea views by day, unexplained sounds by night.
