For twenty years the Hospital Matarazzo stood empty in the middle of São Paulo, and in those years it became the city's most talked-about haunted site. Guards and urban explorers told of shadow figures gliding along the corridors — and of one room said to have been kept sealed for decades because of the 'energy' left by an infectious disease. Nobody wanted to open it.

The hospital was built in 1904 by the Italian industrial magnate Francesco Matarazzo as a palace for the city's Italian colony. After the bankruptcy of 1993 the whole block was left to rot behind boarded gates: operating theatres, chapel and morgue slowly swallowed by greenery. The site is now being rebuilt as the luxury quarter Cidade Matarazzo, but the stories refuse to die.
