Dalnavert
Manitoba · Kanada · House
In the premier's Victorian home, footsteps sound from the floor above — with the scent of flowers that are not there.
Dalnavert was built in 1895 for Hugh John Macdonald, premier of Manitoba and son of Canada's first prime minister, John A. Macdonald. The family shared their era's fascination with the supernatural, and grief struck hard when son Jack died in the house at just 19 — many Winnipeggers believe it is his spirit that lingers. Visitors and staff describe footsteps overhead and a sudden scent of flowers when no blooms are in the building. The museum leans into its reputation with candlelit tours and paranormal investigations every autumn.
