Its first keeper, William "Lighthouse Willie" MacDonald, tended the light for fifty years without missing a single night, and according to staff he still checks on his lighthouse: lamps switch on and off by themselves, voices sound from empty rooms, and a friendly figure is glimpsed on the stairs. Offshore, there are recurring tales of a burning ghost ship sighted in the Northumberland Strait. The lighthouse regularly appears on lists of Canada's spookiest places to spend the night.
