Since the summer of 1980, motorists on the A2 have reported a woman dressed in white suddenly standing at the roadside before or inside the two-mile tunnel. The most famous incident came in September 1983, when two young lawyers gave the hitchhiker a lift; in a faint voice she announced that something truly terrible was about to happen – and when they turned around, the back seat was empty. The story made headlines far beyond Switzerland, and Basel parapsychologists read the figure as the restless soul of an accident victim. Sightings have grown rare since the late 1980s, but the White Woman of the Belchen remains Switzerland's best-known modern ghost.
