Lenzburg Castle

Aargau · Schweiz · Castle

At Lenzburg hangs the bell that exposed a murderer – and is said to toll by itself on full-moon nights.

So many legends cling to the thousand-year-old castle of Lenzburg that they fill a book of their own. Best known is the tale of the bell: when a man was found murdered on the road and the culprit could not be caught, a bone from the corpse was tied to the castle bell's rope, and everyone seeking the bailiff's justice or alms had to ring it. Many years later an old beggar pulled the rope – and was suddenly drenched in blood, whereupon he confessed to committing the murder in his youth. To this day the bell is said to toll on full-moon nights though no one is at the castle, and the grieving Well Maiden is said to dwell in the courtyard's deep well.
