At Alboinplatz, on the border of Schöneberg and Tempelhof, lies an unexpectedly deep ice-age pool, a dead-ice hole that folk tradition named Blanke Helle – the shining Hel. Legend tells that in the primeval forest here lived an old priest who served the death goddess Hel. Twice a year she sent two black bulls up from the depths to plough his field. When a Christian monk took over the site and refused to sacrifice to the goddess, her fury woke: the next time the bulls rose from the water, they dragged the monk down into the pool with them. For generations it was then said that Blanke Helle swallowed one victim every year, and that its depths have no bottom. Today a colossal limestone aurochs, raised in the 1930s, still stands guard over the goddess's pool.
