The little fieldstone church by the pond in Alt-Tempelhof is one of Berlin's oldest buildings, raised in the 13th century within the commandery that gave the whole district its name: Tempelhof, the court of the Templars. The knightly order that guarded Europe's pilgrim roads was dissolved in 1312 amid accusations of heresy and secret rites, and legends took root around the churches it left behind. In Tempelhof, since at least 1878, people have told of an underground passage leading from the village church – the Templars' secret way, dug so they could vanish from the church when enemies stood at the door. No passage has ever been found, but the legend refuses to die, and the medieval churchyard around the church makes an evening walk by the pond just eerie enough. Tempelhof's dead have rested here for eight centuries, close by the crusader knights' vanished court.
