The alchemist with ruby-red eyes is said to still roam Peacock Island. In the 1600s it was whispered that ships straying too close to the island rotted and sank.

On the secluded island of Pfaueninsel in the Havel, alchemist Johannes Kunckel ran a secret laboratory for the Great Elector from 1685. In purpose-built furnaces he created his famous ruby glass, but the people along the Havel knew better: out there, animals were experimented on and pacts were made with the devil. Ships sailing too close were said to suddenly rot like decayed wood or take on water and sink. After four years a fire destroyed the laboratory; when the Elector died, Kunckel was accused of embezzlement and left the country. But according to legend he never left the island: night visitors tell of a dark figure with glowing ruby-red eyes gliding between the ancient oaks – the alchemist's restless spirit, still hunting the secret of gold in his burned-down laboratory.
