In Bukken the old one sat under the card table picking up fallen cards — but he dared not touch the clubs, for he feared the cross.

In Bukken a wild and lawless life went on with drink and cards, and often the Evil One sat under the table helping by picking up the cards that fell — but the clubs he left lying, for he feared the cross. Once a man was missing from the party, and as they spoke of it a stranger stepped in and gladly joined; soon they noticed the clubs being scratched up, and under the table he lay with claws on his feet. They slipped out one by one, but the innkeeper set him to count a barrel of rye, and just before he finished a priest came and bound him.
