Estonia's most famous ghost story belongs to the episcopal castle of Haapsalu. In the Middle Ages no woman was allowed inside the castle, but a canon smuggled in his beloved disguised as a choirboy. When the deception was uncovered, he was condemned to starve in the dungeon – and the girl was walled up alive in the baptistery wall with only bread and water. Her figure is said to appear in the chapel window on full-moon nights in August, mourning her beloved. The legend was written down as early as 1861 and is celebrated today with the White Lady Days each late summer.
