Princess Auguste of Württemberg died mysteriously at Koluvere in 1788, aged just 24 – her unhappy spirit is said never to have left the castle.

The medieval episcopal castle of Koluvere in western Estonia became a prison in the 1780s for Princess Auguste of Württemberg, sister-in-law of the Russian heir to the throne. Banished here in 1787 after a scandal at Catherine the Great's court, the young princess died the very next year under circumstances never fully explained – officially of a haemorrhage, though persistent rumours spoke of neglect or violence. She was buried in Kullamaa church, but her weeping figure is said to wander the castle halls at night. Auguste is regarded as Koluvere's own White Lady and has given the castle its melancholy reputation.
