Carrer dels Mirallers 7

On the fourth floor of the mirror-makers' lane, the national poet Verdaguer conducted exorcisms in the 1890s – the possessed were led up the stairs while neighbours listened through the walls.
In narrow Carrer dels Mirallers, the old mirror-makers' lane behind Santa Maria del Mar, hides one of Barcelona's strangest addresses: on the fourth floor of number 7, the priest and national poet Jacint Verdaguer devoted himself to exorcism in the 1890s. Against the Church's wishes he took part in rites where people believed possessed were led up the dark staircase; neighbours told of screams, shouted prayers and thuds carrying through the walls all night. The scandal helped bring about Verdaguer's fall from grace, but the lane kept its reputation. Residents have since spoken of inexplicable dread in the stairwell and a face glimpsed in the topmost window – and on a wall in the lane a carved woman's face still stares out, known in local speech as the witch.
