The barely visible lane of Flor de Lliri by Santa Caterina market was long counted among Barcelona's 'cases malèfiques' – the evil houses. Legend tells of a lodging house here where travelling guest after guest vanished without trace. The explanation, when it finally surfaced, was ice-cold: the bed in the guest room was a death machine, rigged to drop through the floor while the guest slept, after which the hosts emptied the luggage and disposed of the body. No one knows how many ended their days in the walls and the cellar. Neighbours later said the murdered guests' restless spirits stayed in the lane, and that at night one could hear dull thuds and stifled cries from the houses – the sound of travellers who never arrived.
