Torre Baró Castle
Barcelona · Spain · Tower
Neighbours saw lights in the half-finished castle's window openings and a small figure on the ridge at dusk — the tower is known as the cursed castle.
High on the Collserola slope above Nou Barris rises a castle that never became anything, and which the neighbourhood calls the cursed castle. According to local telling, the Sivatte family raised the tower in the early 1900s partly for the sake of their sick child — the mountain air and the countryside were to be the cure. But the children died of the epidemics of the age, grief killed the project, and the building was abandoned half-finished. For decades the empty shell stood as a ghost castle above the city, and those living nearby spoke of lights moving in the window openings at night and of a small figure seen on the ridge at dusk. The building had been intended as a luxury hotel in a planned garden city. To this day, restored as a viewpoint, the tower keeps its popular name — a monument to a dream that died with its children.
