Among the hillside's hundred thousand graves hides an Egyptian pyramid of sealed secrets – and at dusk the Vampire of the Raval is said to walk from her unmarked mass grave.

Montjuïc cemetery, opened in 1883, climbs down the mountain's seaward face in terraces of mausoleums and burial niches – an entire city of the dead above the harbour. Here Enriqueta Martí, the 'Vampire of the Raval', ended in an unmarked mass grave after dying in prison in 1913 before she could stand trial; legend has her black silhouette appearing on the mountain at sunset, still restless, with no grave of her own to haunt. The cemetery's own riddle is the pyramid-shaped tomb of Pilar Soler, designed by cemetery architect Leandre Albareda and covered in Egyptian symbols – almost nothing is known of the woman beneath it, and Albareda's own Egyptian pantheon was sealed in 1922 with its secrets. At night, guards describe the wind carrying voices between the terraces.
