Beneath the Gothic Quarter's famous bridge sits a skull pierced by a dagger – pull the dagger out, the legend says, and all of Barcelona comes crashing down.

The neo-Gothic bridge over Carrer del Bisbe, built in 1928 by architect Joan Rubió i Bellver, looks medieval but hides a riddle: on its underside sits a stone skull with a dagger driven straight through the crown. Nobody knows why the architect placed it there, and legends have grown thick around it. The most widespread says that if the dagger is ever pulled from the skull, Barcelona's foundations will tremble and the city will fall. Another warns that anyone crossing the bridge who meets the skull's gaze is cursed with bad luck – broken only by touching the tortoise on the letterbox at Casa de l'Ardiaca. A third, kinder version promises a granted wish to those who dare stare into the empty eye sockets.
