The convent of Sant Pere de les Puel·les was founded in 945 and stood at the heart of Christian Barcelona when catastrophe came: in 985 Almanzor's troops stormed the city, the convent was burned, and nearly all its nuns were killed or carried off into slavery. Out of the bloodshed grew the legend of Madruí, the nun dragged to Mallorca in captivity, traced and ransomed by a kinsman, who returned to the ravaged convent and testified in court to restore its rights. After her death she was venerated as a saint within its walls. Around the surviving Romanesque church, the slain sisters' presence is said to linger: residents have told of faint hymn-singing at dawn and shadows moving in procession – the nuns who never escaped.
