Lercaro House
Kanarieöarna · Spain · Museum
Catalina Lercaro threw herself into the palace well on her wedding day – and is said still to wander Tenerife's history museum.
This Renaissance palace of 1593 in La Laguna, Tenerife, today houses the island's history museum – and the Canary Islands' most famous ghost. Legend tells that merchant's daughter Catalina Lercaro, forced to marry a much older man, threw herself into the courtyard well on her wedding day; denied a Christian burial as a suicide, she was said to have been interred within the house itself. Museum guards and visitors have described footsteps on the empty upper floor, doors opening on their own and a female figure in period dress. The phenomena have made the palace a fixture of La Laguna's mystery walks.
