Ochate
Kastilien och León · Spain · Abandoned site
This deserted hamlet in Treviño is called Spain's cursed village – three epidemics emptied it, and the notorious Kanpora EVP recordings were captured here.
Among the hills of the Condado de Treviño stand the ruins of Ochate, a village that legend says was emptied by three epidemics in quick succession in the 1860s and has borne the label of Spain's cursed village ever since. Its fame exploded in 1981 when an alleged UFO photograph was taken nearby, and in 1987 investigators recorded the notorious EVP by the San Miguel bell tower, including cries interpreted as the Basque word kanpora – get out. One of the investigators was later found dead in his car, feeding the myth. The lone bell tower still looms over a village where visitors report lights, voices and an oppressive silence.
