Mount of Souls
Kastilien och León · Spain · Natural site
On All Souls' Night, slain Templar knights are said to rise from their graves on this hill by Soria – the legend Bécquer made immortal.
The pine-clad hill across the Duero from Soria takes its name from one of Spain's best-known ghost legends: here Templar knights and Castilian nobles are said to have slaughtered one another in a bloody battle, and on All Souls' Night the fallen rise from their graves to hunt across the mountain in tattered shrouds. Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer immortalised the tale in 1861 in El monte de las ánimas, in which young Alonso is torn apart by wolves and Beatriz dies of terror at dawn. Every Halloween the legend is re-enacted at Soria's Festival de las Ánimas, when thousands walk with torches towards the hill.
