Paranormal investigation groups return again and again to Toén with tape recorders, and several claim to have caught unexplained voices — psicofonías — in the empty wards. The reputation grows every year the ruin stands: long corridors with beds left behind, scraps of case files on the floor and doors standing half open into rooms nobody has cleared.

The psychiatric hospital outside Ourense opened in 1959 as a pioneering project under the psychiatrist Manuel Cabaleiro Goás, holding around 350 patients at its peak. The complex was originally designed as a leprosy hospital, which explains its remote setting far outside the city. It closed in January 2012 and was left to decay, and is today one of Galicia's most talked-about urbex destinations.
