Louise de Budos, who died mysteriously in 1598, is said to appear as Chantilly's white lady, an omen of death.

The palatial château of Chantilly north of Paris carries the legend of Louise de Budos, young wife of Constable Henri de Montmorency. She reputedly won his hand with an enchanted ring given by a beggar woman – but one September evening in 1598 she was found dead in her chamber, her head twisted backwards and the room reeking of sulphur, as though the Devil had claimed his due. She is said to appear ever since as a white lady in the state rooms, dressed as at the moment of her death. Tradition holds that each apparition foretells the death of a lord of Chantilly.
