The mountain fortress of Joux guards the gorge at Pontarlier in the Jura and holds one of France's cruellest castle legends. When the crusader Amauri III returned home to find his young wife Berthe had taken a lover, he had the knight killed and Berthe locked away for ten years in a cell so cramped she could neither stand upright nor lie at full length – with a view of the gibbet where her lover's corpse rotted. Freed after her husband's death, she ended her days in a convent, but her weeping ghost is said to wander the fortress corridors still. Over the years, guards and visitors alike have reported a white shape and whimpering sounds in the night.
