Athena was carrying the rock to the Acropolis when the crow brought the news. She dropped the stone where it lies — and made all ravens black.

The hill rising in the middle of Athens is, by the Athenians' own account, not a hill at all but a stone that was dropped. Athena had broken the rock loose on Mount Penteli and was carrying it towards the Acropolis to raise the citadel higher when a crow met her in the air with news that the daughters of Kekrops had opened the basket she had forbidden them to open. The goddess, enraged, let the rock fall where she stood, and it became Lycabettus. The crow that brought the message was punished by being turned black, and every raven has been black since. The name carries a second folk explanation: this is where the wolves went, into the dark woods above the city.
