The Well of Kifissia (To pigadi tis Kifisias)
Attika · Grekland · Haunted site
The shadows at the well on Pesmatzoglou Street were first seen in 1945, and the screaming came from below. Water spirits keep whoever leans over.
On Pesmatzoglou Street in Kifissia lies a filled-in well the neighbourhood still talks about. The first known incident dates to 1945: people in the house described shadow figures moving around the well head at night and screams that seemed to rise from the shaft. The well was filled in, but the reeds still growing around the spot are said to prove the water is down there. In Greek folk belief a well with a large underground cistern has its own stoicheio — a short figure who sits on the rim, never speaks and never harms anyone, but only beckons to young women to come closer. That is the creature Athenians mean when they say you should not lean over an old well after dark.
