High on the façade of Thököly út 61 a woman of stone leans out and gazes east. The people of Zugló call her the Marble Bride. According to the legend a newly married couple lived here when the First World War broke out. The husband was called to the front, word of his death reached home — but his wife refused to believe it and took her place at the railing every day to wait. The Spanish flu took her there, leaning on the balcony rail. Days after the funeral her husband came home unharmed, and when he learned she had waited until her last breath he had her likeness carved in stone and the balcony door walled shut. Look closely and you will see the figure has no legs, and that the balcony is no balcony at all. The truth is prosaic — the architect Lajos Ybl had seen the same device in Bourges — but Zugló has never traded the legend for the facts.
