The Stock Exchange Palace on Szabadság tér served for decades as the headquarters of Hungarian television, and its stairwell held a paternoster lift: open cars in an endless chain, no doors, never stopping. The rule whispered among the staff was that you must never ride over the turn at the very top. Anyone who did, the legend said, would not come back down in the same building but end up somewhere else — on a floor that does not exist, or in another world entirely. Employees have described a car coming down empty right after the turn although someone had stepped in, and a figure standing in a car passing at three in the morning, when the building is locked and empty.
