Vígszínház – Comedy Theatre of Budapest
Budapest · Ungern · Theatre
A green-eyed ghost is said to roam Budapest's Comedy Theatre, while night watchmen hear knocking from the cellar.
The Vígszínház, Budapest's grand Comedy Theatre from 1896, harbours a restless spirit of its own – or so its theatre folk insist. Night watchmen and staff have repeatedly encountered a figure with glowing green eyes in the empty auditorium, and strange sounds and knocking have echoed from the cellar at night. Even theatre director Zsolt Harsányi is said to have spoken openly of an unquiet spirit dwelling in the building. Some point to Count István Keglevich, a founding figure of the theatre who died in a duel, others to the novelist Mór Jókai – both apparently unwilling to take a final bow.
