Hastings House

Västbengalen · Indien · House

Governor-General Warren Hastings is said to return by horse-drawn carriage, hunting for his lost papers.

Hastings House in Alipore was the country seat of Warren Hastings, British India's first governor-general, and today houses a women's college. Tradition holds that Hastings' ghost arrives now and then in a horse-drawn carriage, steps out and searches desperately for documents that went missing when he left India. On the playing field, a boy is also said to appear – he reportedly died when a football struck him hard in the chest mid-match. A third tale has a pearl-white horse, shot after losing races in the 1930s, galloping through the garden on Saturday nights.
